Turnip

Turnips, a member of the brassica family, are a dual-purpose vegetable producing an edible root ball and leaves. A centuries old crop in Europe, starting with the Romans, turnips are a multi purpose crop for both human and animal consumption. The turnip root is roughly baseball size and has a pungent earthy flavor. The green leafy tops are typically served steamed, sauteed or added to soups or stews. In Scotland, turnips are referred to as neeps and are served with haggis. Turnips can also be planted as an easy grazing crop for pasture animals.
