Ornamental Kale, also known as Flowering Kale, is a fabulous cool season crop that extends the growing season for bedding color. A popular cut flower variety, Flowering Kale is also used for restaurant garnishes, garden borders and container plantings. Primarily grown in fall and early spring, the cooler temperatures make the kale head color up richly. Grown with focal interest in mind, these varieties are bred for color saturation, shape and form. Although they are edible, the taste is bitter and they are much better suited for decoration in floral arrangements or landscapes. These garden beauties appear like large, frilly flower heads once fully grown and display joyful showy color blends of deep purple, mauve, creamy white and mulberry.
